Inspired by local history, the gardens surrounding purpose built independent living units and a public walkway were designed to contrast Mediterranean style plants with natives, indigenous to the local Hahndorf area.
Small areas of garden were created for each unit providing residents the opportunity to remain active outdoors. Plants selected were familiar to residents, compatible with the local climate and provided colour in the garden throughout the seasons.
Maintaining visual access and ease of use were important considerations for the residents when using the public walkway adjacent to the units. Interpretive signage, detailing the local history of the area and indigenous plants were used to create a walk with interest for the residents, locals and visitors to the area.
